High-Velocity Hurricane Zone Rules in Miami-Dade
Miami-Dade and Broward are the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. No other counties in the state carry that designation.
Inside the HVHZ, exterior glazed openings must be protected against wind-borne debris in new construction and in many renovation projects. You can meet that requirement with impact-rated windows and doors or with code-compliant shutters over standard glass. Impact-rated products protect the opening permanently, with nothing to put up when a storm is coming.
Miami-Dade NOA and Florida Product Approval
Products earn HVHZ approval by passing testing. Large and small missile impact tests are followed by pressure load cycling to confirm the assembly stays sealed after a strike.
Products that pass receive a Notice of Acceptance from the Miami-Dade Building Product Control Division. The NOA lists approved sizes, configurations, and design pressures, and its number goes on your permit application.
